One Room Challenge - Mudroom Makeover Reveal

Here we are, after 7 weeks... the FINISH LINE!

It feels really good to say that the room is finished. I love interior design but doing the one room challenge is definitely crazy, exhausting, and exciting, but totally worth it.

In case if you missed a week or are just stopping by for the first time here are links to the previous weeks for this challenge.

And in case if you'd like to see my past #oneroomchallenge makeovers

you can click here, and here.

Now lets get to why you are here, our mudroom:

Before / After

Our basic builder "mudroom", really it was supposed to just be a hallway with a closet, SO happy we asked them to take the closet out, ... has completely transformed!

This built in that my Dad helped us with has really helped our home feel more like a true Bungalow and not the builder grade "Bungalow" it was built to be. And it feels so much taller and bigger in this little room. The wallpaper also helps with that by drawing your eye up.

Speaking of wallpaper, I love it! Thankfully I got it all up, I originally thought it would be peel and stick, but it was peel-able pre-pasted paper and it took me 3 days to get it all up! Seriously blaming this on having kids, which it is, but it also took SO MUCH LONGER then I had anticipated. It was just that every single piece had so many cuts because of all of the doorways, switches, plugs, and my bench. It was definitely a labor of love. However, I learned a lot and think I could do it again much better... and faster. Of course having a baby that doesn't sleep, ever,  would still slow me down.

wallpaper, mirror (on sale right now)

The bench we had before was an old outdoor bench that was basically just holding piles of stuff and never getting used the way it should be. Now we have this beautiful bench that we can use to put on our shoes and the kids can hangout on as well if they want. (forgive my not quite finished "leather" cushion, I wanted you to still see the vision so I photographed it, but it was the one thing I did not finish sewing)
Because half of our square footage is still unfinished, the basement, the kids don't have many places to escape too yet still get cozy. I wanted this to be a fun little nook where they could still be seen, my oldest of 4 is only 9, but feel secluded.

The light fixture turned out so good! I absolutely love it and love how it looks so much more expensive then it actually is. And its definitely better then what we had.

I decided to switch the "hello" sign with this fun digital print from Jenny's Print Shop.  I love the colors and especially the bold reminder it will be to my kids as they pass through this door daily. The door to the left leads to the garage so this entrance to our house gets used the most.

house vase , key hook

I decided to keep the rug and I'm so happy I did. I was worried it looked too muddy against our floor, but I still wanted something that would blend in since this room is small and still connected to our main living space.

Just ignore this embarrassing chair situation going on here ... hopefully we can address this room soon.

Thankfully the baskets, the white built-in, and especially the blue wallpaper helped bring out that dark blue gray detail like I hoped it would. Phew! This rug is so nice and I believe will clean up very easily since it is wool. And its on sale again right now!

Now that we have more storage and have found a home for everything, even spill over balls that belong in the garage, hopefully the kids will help me keep this place organized and clean.

And so far its working, they each love having their own easily accessible basket, well its worked for today, we'll see over time but i'm really optimistic!

One Room Challenge: Mudroom Makeover - BONUS WEEK

Actually this is week 6, but its not the reveal week that week 6 typically is, because Linda from Calling it Home gave the participants an extra week!  You can read more about that here.

Also, Welcome back!!!
If you'd like to catch up and see "before" shots of the space I am making over and my design plans be sure to click on the previous weeks listed below.

Last week I felt really behind.

And guess what I still feel that way, ha!

But I have made progress.

First I painted the ceiling white, it used to be gray, for some reason my kids and EVEN my husband didn't notice that day when I had painted it... was it worth it? Maybe, I sure hope so! Even though that ceiling is small it took me way longer than it should have because, you know, kids :)

Then my WONDERFUL husband (he always has some reason to hate the new light fixtures while he's installing them and i'm so happy he does them for me still) got the light fixture up. This picture is not good at all for showing it off, but I LOVE it. It looks so much better then our builder basic flush mount.

Then after multiple days of painting, I finally finished the built in and the shiplap!
I also grabbed a few more basket options at our local Target... but decide to return them.
I just still love the original 2 baskets. The black plastic woven one looked and fit well, however I worried with daily wear from my kids pulling out and cramming it into the built in if it would hold up for very long. So the next day I brought it back and also purchased a few things form the new Magnolia, Hearth and Hand line at Target! LOVE IT ALL!

Unfortunately our Target wasn't well stocked and sold out of most of what I was hoping to try for this room, but I did get a couple of great accessories. You'll see them next week.

I was excited to get started on the Wallpaper and then remembered that I needed to stain the bench first.

Here is the before, which is so pretty!

And the after... hmmm, my goal was to match it the best I could to this mirror on the floor that will be in the room, and I think I did alright.  However now I am regretting not just leaving it natural and putting a clear coat on it.

Thankfully the next day I liked it a little better (sorry for all of the night pictures, its just the only real time I can make good progress on the room, when the kiddos are asleep)

Better?

If I have time to make one, i'm putting a cushion on the bench so It doesn't really matter too much.  But you will still see the front edge of the bench.

Then last night we started hanging the wallpaper! Which by the way, is NOT a peel and stick like I wanted and was told. Its a "peel-able" prepasted wallpaper. So wish me luck while I finish it today. I thought it wouldn't be too bad to hang but It is definitely not as easy as putting a sticker on the wall. Hopefully I won't mess it up too bad.

So that is where we are now. Hopefully I made the right decision on the paper, so far i'm really liking it. Except for the hanging part. :)

Make sure you come back next Thursday to see the finished reveal. I can't believe how close it is! Its all so exciting and scary at the same time. Will we finish our mudroom? I sure hope so since we all can't wait to use it.

One Room Challenge - Mudroom Makeover Week 5

Here we are at week 5 of the #oneroomchallenge. Just a quick reminder that we have Linda from Calling It Home who is hosting and responsible for this fabulous biannual event! And @housebeautiful is her media partner. I've been loving all of the participants that I have been able to check out so far. Definitely have chosen a few favorites to follow. You can check out the other guest participants, like me, here. And the 20 sponsored participants here.

If this is your first time stopping in, click on these links to get caught up on the previous weeks.

week 1 /  week 2 /  week 3 / week 4

As you may have guessed this week was not as productive (hopefully I'm not the only one) as I had hoped. My Husband left town for more than half of the week and with Halloween prep and Halloween day with having young children I was pretty busy and wasn't able to finish my "to do" list for the mudroom.

I do have a little progress that i'm excited to show you though.

Shiplap!

Right before my husband left he was able to help me get the shiplap up.

Thankfully this didn't take too long, in fact we did it in about an hour, after the kids were in bed. We do need to get that last skinnier piece up top. We just need to shave a little off the top in the corner where the drywall mud is thicker.

And since my husband left town I just moved forward without it. hopefully we'll get it up tomorrow. My sister came over one morning and helped me with the baby while I prepped for painting, definitely did not anticipate the sanding and clean up and then taping off the floor and bench to take as long as it did. By the way THANK YOU SIS!

It was so nice to start painting later that day during  nap time. Of course I've only got the primer up. but I'm hoping to get the first coat of paint up tomorrow! ... And nap time doesn't last too long, my worst sleeper happens to also be my adorable helper.

Another exciting update is I got my new light fixture!!!

I ended up switching from the light I had in my mood board to this one. I still love the other light a lot but was getting mixed reviews, especially from my husband, so I decided to find a few other great contenders and this is the one we settled on. I can't wait to get it up! (by the way this flush mount comes in black and chrome, its making a come back people - you should check them out they are pretty cool).

Still hunting for the right baskets or a handle swap solution on that top basket? ... these two are both looking so good against the white primer.

Hopefully this time next week i'll be done with paint and finally get my wallpaper up!

Thank you everyone for all of your support and please come back next week to see where I'm at, hopefully much much closer to the finish line since this challenge is almost over! Wish me luck, I seriously need it.
